Belgian Politician to Serve Second Term

Re-election Approved by EU Leaders

On March 24, 2022, EU leaders re-elected Charles Michel as President of the European Council for a second term of two and a half years, beginning on June 1, 2022. Michel, a Belgian politician, has served as the Council's chief since late 2019.

Born on December 21, 1975, Michel is a member of the Movement Réformateur (MR) political party. He previously served as Prime Minister of Belgium from 2014 to 2019.

During his first term as President of the European Council, Michel oversaw the EU's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and played a key role in the bloc's negotiations with the United Kingdom over Brexit.

In his second term, Michel is expected to focus on issues such as the ongoing war in Ukraine, the energy crisis, and climate change.
